Read an article on Wired Magazine http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/08/ff_webrip/.  This is my point of view on how our use of the internet has evolved:

1. Gone are the days when one would fire-up their favourite browser go to their bookmarks and start reviewing content site by site. 
2. Then came the RSS reader, an application which you installed on your computer, add all of our favourite sites and review them in one place
3. Then came cloud computing where the desktop based applications moved to the internet and you could pretty much do the same but you had more freedom to look at your RSS content from anywhere and you could share then via email or sharing your favourites via digg, etc..
4. This still lacked rich content, then came social media applications like myspace, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.  Now the users could add their favourite content to their web based apps and also share this content with their netowrk of friends

Is email use going to diminish as we start using identities for single signing into various portals on the internet.

As time goes by we seem to be moving away from OPEN architectures to closed architectures where we start relying on applications and their assocated API's.  It seems to me that everytime we has come up with a solution of freeing ourselves from closed architectures we somehow revert back to closed architectures.  Maybe it is human nature or just law of the universe, were one cannot exist as an entity, somehow become part of the collective.
