Why is this a big deal? Previously Facebook only provided SSL for authentication only, once authenticated all data was being exchanges with Facebook servers in clear. This allowed man in the middle attacks and sniffing attacks.
So even if you do not understand the security implications, I would strongly advise that you turn this option ON!
